Sugar Loaf’s Next Chapter: Leelanau Conservancy to Restore Iconic Landmark as Public Recreation Area
Posted by Jamie Jewell on Jul 18 , 2025 - 12:00 pm

A beloved piece of Leelanau County history is set to come alive once again. After decades of dormancy, the former Sugar Loaf Resort property is on the path to becoming a vibrant public recreation destination—thanks to an extraordinary gift and a shared vision for the future.
From Ski Slopes to Scenic Trails
The Leelanau Conservancy has announced plans to acquire 285 acres of the long-closed Sugar Loaf Resort property and transform it into a four-season haven for outdoor enthusiasts. While the site won’t reopen as a traditional ski resort, the new vision includes:
-
Hiking and biking trails winding through the property
-
A summit trail leading to breathtaking panoramic views
-
Winter fun with snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and a sledding hill
-
Family-friendly spaces, such as a seasonal ice rink, a nature play area, and a community gathering pavilion
Visitors will even have the option to hike to the summit and enjoy self-powered downhill skiing during the winter months.
A Community Effort to Revive a Landmark
To make this dream a reality, the Conservancy must raise $8 million for the site plan and necessary improvements. Thanks to generous donors, $6.4 million has already been secured, leaving $1.6 million to go before the December 31 deadline.
This opportunity came about through an extraordinary gesture by SPV 45 LLC—the private ownership group that acquired Sugar Loaf in 2020—who offered to gift the property if the Conservancy could create a plan worthy of its legacy and raise the funds to bring it to life.
Honoring the Past, Building the Future
Sugar Loaf holds a special place in Leelanau’s history. First opened as a community ski hill in 1947, the resort grew into a bustling ski destination through the 1960s and 70s before closing in 2000. Now, nearly 25 years later, the Conservancy envisions a space where residents and visitors can reconnect with the land through free, year-round access.
Plans also include ecological restoration, such as planting native species, improving watershed health, and creating a wildflower demonstration garden to inspire and educate. Infrastructure improvements—like a trailhead, parking, and restrooms—will ensure the space is welcoming and accessible for all.
What’s Next?
For now, the property remains closed to the public while fundraising continues. Two community information sessions will be held to share details and gather input:
-
July 30 at 6 p.m. – Solon Township Hall
-
August 5 at 6 p.m. – Glen Arbor Township Hall
The goal is clear: protect Sugar Loaf forever as a place where future generations can explore, play, and appreciate the natural beauty of Leelanau.
